How to Choose the Right Soccer Ball

Which is the right soccer ball for the back yard, practice or a H.S. match ?

What is the right size for a 6 year old or a 14 year old ?

The information below will help answer these questions.

Types of Soccer Balls

Professional Match Balls - designed for the top professional soccer clubs and are approved at the highest international standards.
Match Balls - are high performance ranged balls developed for use in most amateur soccer matches. They are guaranteed to conform to official size and weight by FIFA and NFHS ( National Federation of State High School Associations)
Practice or Camp Balls - are designed to be used by coaches for all age groups and are perfect for general practice applications.
Indoor Soccer Balls - are usually the same size/ weight as outdoor balls and have an outside cover similar to a tennis ball.
Futsal Soccer Balls - are usually the same size as other balls. The bladder is filled with a foam like substance to give it less bounce for better play on harder surfaces.

Outer Covering

Synthetic Cover- The best quality balls are covered with a synthetic leather material which offers a superior feel and softness. A synthetic cover is less water resistant and durable and usually more expensive.
Polyurethane Cover (PU)- These better balls are the most popular and are covered with a material that offers a feel similar to leather. More water and scuff resistant
PVC Cover - Least expensive ball molded out of a PVC material that is more plastic like. They are the most durable ball but usually the least popular because of the feel.

Bladder Types

Latex - gives the ball the most lively play and good feel but has the least air retention.
Butyl - better air retention and is the most common

Other Soccer Ball Tips

Deflate Professional Match and Match Soccer Balls slightly after use.
Before inflating soccer balls, give the needle valve a shot of silicone. This will help to keep it moist.
